This book grabbed hold of my heart and mashed it into the ground with its boot heel. Ah, post-war rebuilding! I thought. The survivors come together, they rebuild, they help heal each other. How wonderful.
But it's also fiction describing reality. And so commercial interests move in and ruin everything and break both my heart and the characters in the story. But the characters keep fighting on.
It's well-written. It's a grab-your-shoulders-and-shake-you reality. It's a very difficult book to read, but it's worth it.
